Buffa's has been on the Border of the Quarter on the corner of Esplanade and Burgundy since 1939. Our address is 1001 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA. 70116
Even though it looks like it is pronounced "BUFF-ahs," the correct pronunciation is "BOO-fahs"
No. Although the sons of Vince Buffa, Sr. (the original owner) still own the building, the business has not ben owned or operated by the Buffa's family since the mid 1980s. In 2010, the Rogers family purchased the business. In 2025 Cary Rogers and his spouse Christy Bagley took over full ownership.
Our Front Bar is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, including holidays. Our Back Room opens about 30 minutes before the first show of the day and closes after the last show has finished and all customers have left.
All music happens in our Back Room, which is a full service dining room.
That white alligator — and the mural it lives in — was painted by a local artist for the Hulu series "The First" starring Sean Penn. If it looks familiar, it also makes an appearance in "Your Honor" with Bryan Cranston.
Fun fact: for Season 2 of Your Honor, scenes that were supposed to take place in our Back Room were filmed on a soundstage in Los Angeles. The official reason? Bryan Cranston wanted to be closer to family. The real reason? There’s a scene where the Back Room gets trashed by vandals. Rather than risk paying for actual damages (and possibly shutting us down for repairs), the studio decided it was safer — and cheaper — to just rebuild the whole thing. They even flew the same artist out to L.A. to recreate the mural.
We can comfortably seat up to 50 people, with maximum seating at 63.
The total room capacity is 80, including standing room.
We have two speakers on stands facing the audience. There are three monitors facing the stage.
We are running a Berringer wireless board, controlled by a Mac Mini in the back of the room. An iPad is also available for adjusting sound from the stage if you would like.
As a neighborhood bar, we need to keep the volume within the city's noise ordinance restrictions. To help with this, we have a decibel meter mounted on the rear wall near the ceiling to the left of the back door as you are looking from the stage.
Please keep the sound levels at or below 95 decibels as much as possible, This also helps our servers hear customers, which reduces incorrect orders.
The first picture below is a close up of our decibel meter. The second is how it looks from the stage.
We have a Steinway upright piano and a Ludwig drum set (once played by Dr. John!). Drummers will need to provide their own cymbals and sticks.
Yes, we have a drum set on the stage. Drummers will need to bring their own cymbals and drumsticks.
Yes, we have a Steinway upright piano on the stage.
Yes, we have a DI box available.
We have 5 Shure microphones. Two of them have on/off switches. The others are always on. We also have several mic stands.
Of course you can use your own microphones.
We have not had much luck getting phantom power mics to work, however, even though there is a setting on the soundboard software for them.
Yes, we will have one or two servers available during your show to serve guests.
Our Back Room is family friendly. All ages are welcome. Children under 12 do not need a ticket to attend as long as they are with a parent or legal guardian.
Our front bar is 21 and up due to the presence of video poker machines.
What we charge is entirely up to you. Musicians get 100% of all ticket revenue. Most musicians charge $8 for tickets purchased in advance and $10 at the door, but you are free to charge more or less if you choose.
Our default is $8 for tickets purchased in advance and $10 for tickets purchased at the door. If you would like different amounts, please let us know.
Since we pay musicians 100% of ticket sales and door covers we do not pay a percentage of sales. Everyone receives a $50 guarantee on top of any ticket sales or door charges..
You get to keep your money (including all tips collected) and we keep the money we collect for food and drinks.
The reality is that if you do well, we both do well, If you don't, then neither do we. This is why it is important you promote your own gigs on the various social media platforms in addition to the promotion we do.
Sometime things happen. Maybe it is bad weather, or just a slow time of year. While we both suffer when attendence is low, we want to make sure you at least get something to cover your expenses. You get this guarantee regardless of whether you playing to an empty room or a full one or anything in between.
Musicians are usually paid the next day after their gig, This is so we can make sure all the door covers were rung in and any refunds (which is very rare) are processed. We pay via Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle. Please make sure we have your correct address to insure prompt payment. Like everyone else, we're human and can make mistakes. If you didn't receive a payment or have questions about the amount, do not hesitate to reach out to ObscureInfoEmail.
We offer two free drinks OR a free meal for each musician and 25% off for any additional drinks or food.
Absolutely. Since you keep 100% of the ticket and door money, you’re welcome to invite as many guests as you’d like at no charge. Just let us know how many you’re bringing so we can pull those tickets off the website, and make sure your guests either introduce themselves to the server or that you pass their names along before your set starts.
Just a heads-up — guests will need to pay full price for food and drinks unless you’d like them to use your comp meal or drink discount instead. Totally your call, but comps and discounts only apply to one person. That means each performer can choose to use their own or give it to a guest — not both.
There is usually plenty of street parking within a block or so of Buffa's. All we ask is that you do not block our neighbor's driveways.
If there is no parking available right next to the building, pull up by the stop sign on Burgundy or just in front of the bar on the corner at Esplanade to unload equipment.
We used to live stream almost every music event. But as things have picked back up post-pandemic, fewer people are tuning in. On top of that, Facebook — which we used for streaming — uses AI that regularly mutes songs it thinks are under copyright, even when it’s wrong. The end result? A frustrating experience for anyone trying to watch from home.
We’ve also found that switching to a different platform just isn’t realistic right now — our team doesn’t have the time or tech skills to make it happen smoothly.
That said, if live streaming is important to you, talk to Cary Rogers or email ObscureInfoEmail. We can’t make any promises, but we’ll do our best to help.
We share our event list with WWOZ, Gambit, Times Picayune, Where Y'At, and Offbeat. In addition, we have posters up in the building listing all the events for the month. All events have a listing on Facebook, and we also do two posts on Facebook and Google the day of your event.
We encourage you to share your Facebook page with us so we can make you a cohost. You can do that by filling out the form on our web site.
We also have an email list. We send out almost 1300 emails once a week to our subscribers. The email typically goes out on Wednesday or Thursday and covers all events up to the following Tuesday or Wednesday.
There are several ways to find your event on our site. All are listed on our Home Page (you may need to click the load more button until your date loads).
You can also go to our events page and select your name from the pop-down to see a list of your upcoming events.
Ideally, straight from you — that’s always best. But if we don’t get one, or if yours could use a little updating, we’ll pull info from the web to fill in the gaps. Either way, we’ll rewrite it in our voice so everything on the site has the same feel. If you like what we come up with, feel free to use it anywhere — it’s your story, after all.
